Project description

A team of Deaf and hearing linguists and translators from all over Austria is involved in the research project ‘The Interplay of Nonmanuals and Clauses in Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS) Texts’. This follow-up project aims at extending our knowledge on the contribution of nonmanuals to clauses in ÖGS. In particular, we will apply a new method for identifying and analyzing nonmanuals, based on corpus data of several varieties of ÖGS and on annotations by Deaf native signers. A model for the linguistic analysis of nonmanuals will also be developed.

The project is affiliated to the Department of Linguistics of the Karl-Franzens-University Graz; the national research partner is the Centre for Sign Language and Deaf Communication (ZGH) of the Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt. The previous project as well as the follow-up project have been funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

The previous project on ‘Segmentation and Structuring of Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS) Texts’ (2011 – 2015) focused on signed texts/discourse. The project was directed on the structuring of Austrian Sign Language texts by focusing on the interaction between non-manual elements and (manual) signing. Also the project investigated the segmentation of signed texts by investigating the occurrence of segmentation cues such as pauses, non-manual elements like head nods, and others.
